Band of the month : Emarosa

Emarosa is a six-member post-hardcore band from Lexington, Kentucky, formed in 2006. Emarosa was originally known as Corsets Are Cages, but changed their name shortly before their first EP, This Is Your Way Out, released in 2007. Their debut album Relativity, features their newest vocalist Jonny Craig.
Origin and band debut
According to Alternative Press, keyboardist Jordan Stewart had the decision of either attending college on a scholarship, or staying in his hometown of Lexington, Kentucky to start a new band. Stewart stated that "There's too much of an itch to do this," regarding the band he started in February 2006. [6] The band origins date back to early high school, which was said by keyboardist Jordan Stewart on Indiestar.tv. Stewart states some of the members had been playing in high school before "taking it serious," referring to three of the original members on the current lineup (ER White, Lukas Koszweski, Jordan Stewart).[7] Emarosa initially formed as a four piece post-hardcore band called Corsets Are Cages in 2006, and recorded three songs during this time (most notably Utah, But I’m Taller), however when the band lost two members and gained four new ones (including another vocalist, Chris Roetter) it was decided that it was time to start afresh with a new name: Emarosa. The band was signed to Thriving Records to record their 7 track EP This Is Your Way Out. It was released on May 8, 2007, by Standby Records through Thriving Records because Standby Records had no distribution at the time.
Emarosa and Jonny Craig: 2007
On November 2007, lead singer Jonny Craig from Dance Gavin Dance, left his band due to extreme tensions and personal conflicts with the other members.[8] After leaving Dance Gavin Dance after the "Saints and Sinners Festival" in New Jersey, Jonny Craig immediately filled in for A Skylit Drive and toured with them while their "then lead singer Jordan" was ill during their tour. It had been only 2 weeks since he left Dance Gavin Dance in which he joined Emarosa who was left without a lead singer. Emarosa officially announced the permanent addition of Jonny Craig on November 19, 2007.
Jordan Stewart (keyboardist) and Lukas Koszewski (drummer) were interviewed in which they referred to the problems regarding Jonny Craig and the transitions: "In the beginning it was pretty intense. We would receive rather nasty comments and messages on Myspace asking what happened to Chris and why Jonny was no longer with Dance Gavin Dance. Sometimes when we play, kids will think it is funny to throw in remarks about the change and how they liked the old stuff better." The time between us realizing Chris wasn't working out to the time Jonny joined was extremely short. But even with Chris in the band, it was already decided that our full-length wouldn't have as much screaming. We just kept writing the way we had been before parting ways with Chris."
Album debut: Relativity
On January 26, 2008, Emarosa posted their first official song with Jonny Craig titled, "New Demo" (now known to be Set It Off Like Napalm). Two weeks later, the demo of "PretendReleaseTheClose" was put on their player. On May 3, 2008, three new post-production songs were added to the MySpace player and the name of the album, Relativity, was revealed. The album was released on July 8, 2008, and received high praise from critics and fans alike. On July 20, 2008, Emarosa became the first Rise Records band to ever reach the Billboard Hot 200 solely through Rise Records. The Devil Wears Prada released their album on August 2007 both with Rise Records and Ferret Records, and reached the Billboard Hot 200 with both of those labels (now signed to Ferret Records).[11]
In Emarosa's latest and first video interview with Indiestar.tv, Jonny Craig stated that "Set It Off Like Napalm" and "Pretend Release the Close" were quote "about the life I was having, Dance Gavin Dance, and how much better I was feeling about being in this band." They were written in one practice session and played live 2 days later. He also said that "Even Bad Men Love Their Mothers" was co-sang by his mother. Boys II Men was also said to be one of Jonny Craig's main musical influences. Craig states that most of the intrumentals were already completed prior to joining Emarosa, in which Jordan Stewart (keyboardist) says five were completed, to be exact. Jerry Roush formerly of Sky Eats Airplane makes an appearance stating he's the new screamer for Emarosa but is joking the entire interview. [12]
Touring
Emarosa has toured with the bands Fiora, Akissforjersey, Before Their Eyes, and The Wedding. Emarosa toured with A Skylit Drive, Sky Eats Airplane, and Breathe Carolina the entire month of July. They began another tour in Canada with Canadian headliners Dead and Divine for the month of August and played with Chiodos on August 30, 2008 as a special event in their hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. Emarosa was the headline for the "Rise Records Tour" the entire month of September and first week of October, with support from In Fear and Faith and Attack Attack!. Their latest tour, "The Delicious Tour", was alongside Pierce the Veil and Breathe Carolina.Emarosa toured the UK alongside You Me at Six and The Spill Canvas from March 6 until March 13, 2009.[13] A Day to Remember announced their latest US Tour (The Sweet Brag Tour) which included The Devil Wears Prada, Sky Eats Airplane, and Emarosa. The tour stretched from March 14 until May 1 2009. June 19 - August 1 2009, Emarosa headlined "The Artery Foundation Across The Nation Tour" supported by I See Stars, Our Last Night, In Fear and Faith, Burden of a Day, and Broadway.
In September 2009, Emarosa will tour with Dance Gavin Dance on Rise Records "Squash The Beef" tour, with supporting acts Of Mice and Men, Of Machines, and Tides of Man.
Emarosa is also confirmed to be playing the Soundwave in 2010.

Family Force 5

Family Force 5 is from and was formed in Atlanta, Gerogia. The three leading members of the band, Soul Glow Activatur, Phatty and Crouton, are sons of Jerome Olds, a Christian artist from the late 1980s. Prior to the formation of Family Force 5, the brothers were members of a "boy band" known as The Brothers, releasing Fact and Reality (1994) and RPM (1995). Both albums were released on Star Song Records, and produced by their father.

Between the Brothers and Family Force 5 the brothers had a band called Ground Noise, which they classified as "a really bad version of Third Day." Before the band chose the name Family Force 5, they had taken on the name "The Phamily". They had to change it later due to copyright issues with Prince's band, The Family.

A decade later, the band signed with Maverick Records for distribution to the mainstream market before signing to Gotee Records for the Christian market. Under the name "The Phamily" the band sought out a dual recording deal in order to better distribute their music to both the mainstream market and the Christian market.According to Soul Glow Activatur, "To me, and pretty much anybody that's under my age, most Christian music is a turnoff. I don't want to be affiliated with that. I want to be affiliated with something that is great music. I feel that Maverick and Gotee together can pull that off."

On March 21, 2006 the band released their first full length Album Business Up Front/Party in the Back which was an instant hit in both the Christian and Mainstream markets. Spawning several hit singles such as "Love Addict" and Earthquake.Their debut album has been both disparaged and praised by Christian and non-Christian critics respectively for not containing overtly Christian content in any of its tracks (with the exception of "Peachy", which was apparently written to convert a friend to Christianity and calls God by name). In March 2007, their debut album was re-released as Business Up Front, Party In The Back: Diamond Edition, which contains three previously unreleased songs.During this time Family Force 5 contributed the song "Mind's Eye" for the compilation album Freaked! A Gotee Tribute to dc Talk's "Jesus Freak". For Christmas, Family Force 5 released a few Christmas-themed audio blogs. They also recorded "Grandma", a cover of Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. Also a new unreleased song entitled "Whatcha Gonna Do With It" was made available for download exclusively at the Wal-Mart music download store.Recently another unreleased song "Master of Disguise" has been posted on Youtube however due to mixed fan reaction to the song it was never slated for release.

The band also toured extensively around this time building up their fan base and building a reputation of wild energetic live act that helped thrust them into headlining shows throughout the US.

In June 2008 the band released an EP entitled The Dance or Die - EP to debut three songs from their upcoming album Dance or Die the songs were; "Dance or Die", "Fever", and "Wake the Dead". On August 19, 2008 the full length album was released taking on a more club orientated mix than Business Up Front/Party in the Back and less Guitas. The full-length album, Dance or Die, received a favorable review in World Magazine.

Blake Soloman of AbsolutePunk.net had the following to say about the album;

"Even though Family Force 5 may be the musical equivalent of mixing Mentos and Coke – lots of build up for something that only ever happens one way – I find myself oddly pleased with Dance or Die."

Dance Or Die sold 17,000 copies in its first week and came in at 30 on the Billboard 200. By the end of January the album had sold over 50,000 units and during early 2009 the band embarked on the AP tour from march to May promoting the album and headling concerts throughout the US.[9]

In May 2009 The band debuted their remix album of Dance or Die (Family Force 5 album); Dance or Die With A Vengeance. It featured remixes by The Secret Handshake, Sean Foreman of 3OH!3, Danger Radio, Jasen Rauch of Red, Matt Thiessen of Relient K, David Crowder of David Crowder Band and Alex Suarez of Cobra Starship. [9] The first single, "The First Time" (Matt Thiessen from Relient K Remix), was released on the band's MySpace page on April 13, 2009. The second single, Get Your Back Off the Wall (Sean from 3oh!3 remix), was released on Altpress.

The Album debuted at #180 on the Billboard top 200, #15 on the Christian Albums chart and #6 on the Dance/ Electronic Albums chart.

Around this time Soul Glow Activatur also created a remix of the song "Best Night of Our Lives" by Everyday Sunday.

On September 5th the band unveiled a new song called "Keep The Party Alive" which will be featured on a compilation EP.

Family Force 5 uses elements of rap, post-hardcore, alternative rock, punk rock, and club oriented crunk, electropunk, electronica and nu metal with positive, party lyrics in their music.

When asked about their "Love Addict" video and its relation to their Christian image, Soul Glow Activatur stated "They want Sandi Patty all over again. They want Amy Grant. And most times, its people that don't understand new art, new videos... We want to make music that is for God, but at the same time, we want to make music that people enjoy and that they're not turned off by."[17]

Herbrightskies

2007 was a year painted with success for herbrightskies. With the release of their EP "Beside Quiet Waters" the band was named "The Pride of Jönköping" - their home town - and heard one of their songs on the radio for the first time. When they weren't working on material for their next release, the band spent a hectic summer playing popular Swedish festivals like Moshpit Open, Rookie and Augustibuller.
Fueled by dedication for their music and the scene, the band has come a long way since it all started back in the fall of 2005. With their almost notoriously energetic and powerful live act they have played with the best and met and exceeded the standards of critics and fans over and over again, catching the eye of the international music scene as well. The band has been contacted by several bookers and a horde of fans from all over Europe and America who have showed their appreciation on their website, urging them to tour outside Scandinavia.
After releasing their 6 track EP in May 2007 on Pretty Dirty Promotions, the band split ways with their original label in early 2008 to sign with successful up-and-coming Örebro-based label District 19 Inc and in may 2008 the debut album “A Sacrament; Ill City” saw the light of day. From there and on they’ve been constantly playing shows and touring to promote the new album. Starting off by playing the Rookiestage on Swedens biggest festival Hultsfredsfestivalen followed by tours in Europe, the UK and Scandinavia together with some of the biggest underground bands from the UK. Now, with 2009 just around the corner things have not slowed down. Big plans for the new year is coming. First of all being one of the acts nominated for Rockbjörnens Myspace award. Then with the participation on this years PANIC AND ACTION TOUR together with Swedish top acts Chemical Vocation and Adept, covering Sweden with TWENTYFOUR shows and then with a summer full of festivals. Plans for new tours in Europe and the UK are also in the making. If 2008 was the year they won the battle, 2009 is the year they will win the war.
